An excellent goalscorer throughout his career, with his dashing moustache finished as top scorer in world football in season 1899/1900 when his 27 goals (in only 33 matches) helped Villa win the League title for the fifth time. Billy was an industrious, never-say-die utility forward, He could also play at right-half and centre-half, giving service from both positions, but he always preferred to be ‘up front’ looking to score goals, and he did just that on a regular basis throughout his long career. He won junior international honours for England in 1896-7 and collected his first full cap in 1903 (against Wales) With Villa he gained a League Division One Championship medal in 1900 and an FA Cup winners medal in 1905. He was Villa’s top scorer in season 1899-1900 with a total of 30 League and cup goals in 39 appearances.
